Touching the trees can teach us a lot about energy.

I’m lucky enough to live near my college campus in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Regularly, I visit campus to sit amongst the giant redwood trees and calm my nervous system.

On my recent visit, something incredible happened that reminded me of three facts:

  • Everything is alive with energy.
  • Everything is vibrating and emitting a signal.
  • Everything is constantly changing and re-forming itself.

Here’s my story.

I was sitting on the outside stage that lives in an outdoor performance area by the Theatre Arts Department. This is the same stage I performed on when I attended college here.

As I was closing my eyes and drinking in the fresh air, something in my body told me to touch the redwood tree I was leaning against with my hand.

I listened and immediately touched the gentle giant without any expectation.

A few seconds after I made contact with the thick trunk of the tree, my hand felt hot, tingly, and like I had a light touch of pins and needles. There was an energy pulsating through the tips of my fingers that eventually traveled down to my feet.

I pictured molecules bouncing from my hand to the tree and back again. I envisioned my hand and the tree as energy dancing together, passing itself back and forth between us.

At one point I felt so relaxed, I almost fell over.

As I sat and touched the tree, I was overcome with a sense of deep inner peace and contentment. Something told me everything would be okay and I was safe.

The feeling got stronger the longer I held my hand to the tree. When I removed my hand, the feeling remained for minutes afterward.

As a test, I shook out my hands and placed them on a different tree, reminding myself not to force anything.

Within about 10-15 seconds, the feeling returned: a hot pulse and tingles, followed by a visceral pins and needles sensation. I took note of the difference and kept experimenting with the trees nearby.

With every tree, I felt the jolt of energy followed by a sensation of deep groundedness. I was so at peace, I teared up with gratitude.

What was happening? What was I feeling?

According to science, I was experiencing some of the same benefits as a practice called ‘Earthing.’

Why does touching trees help us feel better?

There’s a reason we feel at ease amongst the trees.

The wood emits phytoncides, which increase the number of killer cells in your body. This strengthens your immune response.

The trees also help us release higher levels of oxytocin, or the bonding hormone. Simply touching a tree connects us to its unique vibrational patterns, which calms our bodies and minds.

Not only that, tree touching or hugging also increases our serotonin and dopamine levels. We are made of the earth, and when we reconnect to that knowledge, we feel pretty amazing.

Trees also cleanse the air, so breathing under or near a tree ensures you are getting a cleaner sip of the stuff. Breathing cleaner air increases your immune response, helps with digestion, and improves your mood.

Does touching a tree ground you spiritually?

Touching trees feeds our need to connect — with ourselves and nature.

The spiritual wisdom of trees has been documented throughout the ages as sources of healing, mental clarity, physical wellness, and a way to connect deeply with our intuition.

Tree touching can help us ground negative or stressful energy and assist us in returning to the present moment. If you’re having a “monkey-mind” type of day, touching a few trees will help you ground your thoughts quickly.

If you’re ill or recovering from surgery or treatment, touching trees can help speed up your recovery and produce more immune response chemicals. Also, because trees help boost your mood, you’ll feel better, which means your immune system will work better!

5 Lessons from the Trees

After my experience, I walked away with a deeper awareness of my innate power: I am an energy being connected to all parts of this planet.

Not only that, I gained the following valuable insights from sitting with my still friends.

  • It’s okay to slow down.
  • It’s okay to be still.
  • It’s okay to be quiet.
  • It’s okay to rest your brain, mind, and body.
  • It’s okay to BE for a moment, without the pressure to accomplish or pursue something.

Trees are powerful healers, and it’s time to connect with them more.

I’m blessed to live in a place with a ton of them.

Here’s your fun homework assignment: find a tree and give it a nice, long hug.

You’ll feel better, have a clearer mind, and open your heart.
