3 Signs Your Nervous System Has A Receiving Block

Nothing in your life will change until you address your nervous system.

In manifesting, we constantly hear about mindset.

The truth? It’s your nervous system that’s controlling how much you can manifest.

Your nervous system is one of the first things to form in pregnancy. It records everything that happens to you and everything you witness into two categories: is this safe or unsafe?

Because most of this gets stored in the subconscious mind, which controls 95% of our behavior, habits, and actions, we get stuck in a program that keeps us manifesting the same level of experiences.

The nervous system wants to ensure your survival, so if it’s programmed to believe that receiving is dangerous, you’ll have a hard time changing your circumstances at the core level.

The nervous system must feel safe receiving what you say you want, whether it’s more money, love, freedom, or self-awareness.

Do you have a nervous system receiving block?

Below, I’m sharing 3 signs that your nervous system may feel unsafe receiving good things.

After reading them, make an effort to notice the reaction in your body when they happen next. You’ll learn a lot about what you feel safe letting in and why you reject good things.

🫣 Sign #1: You deflect or deny compliments.

Instead of receiving compliments with grace, you feel guilt, shame, or embarrassment.

Your nervous system may have learned that it was unsafe to receive attention because of past criticism or humiliation. Having the spotlight on you (even for a moment!) feels like the threat of death because of an experience where you were hurt, shamed, or love was withdrawn because you received attention for something.

This can lead your nervous system to send you signals to get rid of the attention as quickly as possible, so you don’t get into trouble or lose connection with people.

Being invisible helped you survive, and your nervous system wants you to be safe.

ACTION STEP: The next time you receive a compliment, take a moment to let it in and then simply say, “Thank you.” Resist the urge to compliment them back immediately, which is the next sign.

✅ Sign #2: You immediately reciprocate when receiving help or support.

Instead of saying “thank you” and accepting help, you feel the need to return the favor so you don’t “owe” anyone anything.

Maybe you learned to see yourself as the “dependable one” or the one who always supports people without expecting anything in return.

Maybe people assumed you didn’t need support, so you never learned how to ask for it.

Your nervous system may have learned that receiving support from people always comes with strings attached, pain or regret, or having to over-give later.

In an attempt to avoid these experiences and receive belonging from others, you feel the need to reciprocate so no one sees you as greedy, ungrateful, or selfish.

You also may have internalized the idea of “it’s better to give than to receive.”

ACTION STEP: The next time you receive support, simply say “Thank you” and resist the urge to give back right away. Notice what happens in your body when you make this new choice and teach it that it’s okay to receive without giving back.

🐺 Sign #3: You have a “lone wolf” mentality.

Doing it all yourself makes you feel safer because you’ve been disappointed in the past.

Did you know that doing everything ourselves is a threat to the nervous system? Humans are tribal — we are built to connect and work with others.

However, if you’ve had past experiences where people didn’t show up to support you, you may have developed a protective pattern of doing it all yourself to avoid the feeling of abandonment or disappointment.

Your nervous system may have learned that depending on people leads to pain, so doing it all yourself feels much safer.

ACTION STEP: The next time you want to lone wolf something, practice reaching out to someone for help, even if it’s small. Teach your nervous system that it’s okay to start to depend on people again and that asking for help gives them the opportunity to share their gifts with you.
